The Airwell team

Managing Director - Alan Brown

Alan Brown is the driving force behind the Airwell Pumps success story and has continued to apply his extensive knowledge of pumping and problem solving ability to pumping challenges for over 35 years.

In the early 1980's, Alan developed a unique direct air displacement pumping system that revolutionized the way farmers obtained their water supplies. Like other great Australian innovators, Alan saw an opportunity to help out and applied a simple principle to an age old problem, which he continues to do today with other pumping applications.

During the last 30 years Alan has gained considerable knowledge and skill in applying the Airwell technology to a diverse range of pumping applications. He has worked with some of the largest industrial companies in Australia providing solutions for pollution recovery, corrosive fluid applications and also in low flow rate applications.

Alan continues to apply his extensive knowledge and experience to issues facing the Oil and Gas industry and has worked in Australia, Canada and the USA applying Airwell's latest range of Artificial Lift products.

Our history

Airwell Group Pty Ltd is a family owned company that has been trading since 1985. In the early 1980's Managing Director Alan Brown set about designing and building water pumping systems for the agricultural industry in Western Australia. The system needed to operate remotely from power, be economical to run and safer and more reliable than existing water pumping methods such as windmills and solar pumping systems.

After several design attempts and many modifications later, the first Airwell pumps were sold to the agricultural market in 1984. On the back of continued success of the pumping system and its unique design Alan was issued with a patent in 1986 for the Airwell Pump. After winning a number of Commercial Inventors Award at agricultural Field Days in 1987 and the success of the pump systems in the field, Airwell Pumps Pty Ltd, the company was officially launched in 1988. For the next 5 years Airwell Pumps operated from a workshop located in country Western Australia servicing the needs of the Western Australian agriculture industry.

Soon after commencing the business it was recognized that the special features of the Airwell Pump system were suited to many other applications other than agricultural water supply. In 1988 Alcoa were having problems with iron reducing bacteria in water extraction bores. The bacterial contamination was reducing the life of their pumps to as short as two weeks in extreme cases. Having solved a similar problem for an Albany farmer, Airwell supplied its firsts pumps to Alcoa, who have continued to extensively use Airwell pumps ever since.

It was not long before the Airwell Pump and its unique features had gained a niche market in the mining and industrial sectors, overcoming pumping issues associated with pollution recovery and open cut pit wall stabilisation. In 1996 Airwell moved to a commercial premises in Osborne Park, Perth and continued to grow its client base after being involved in some of the biggest pollution recovery projects ever undertaken in Australia.

The company moved again in 2003 into purpose built premises in Malaga Western Australia and expanded its products and services to include the supply of electric submersible pumps, contract water sampling, mobile flow testing and leachate recovery and detection systems. In 2006 the subsidiary company, Airwell Oil and Gas was created to develop and manufacture its new "Gas Well De-liquification" technology in the USA and Canada which has been successfully trialled since 2008.

The Oil & Gas sector

Airwell Group’s Oil and Gas division trading as Airwell Oil and Gas Pty Ltd is a privately owned subsidiary of Airwell Group Pty Ltd.

Airwell Oil and Gas was established in 2005 after Airwell Group had been approached several times from existing and potential clients seeking ways to overcome some of the difficulties associated with deep hole, low volume water pumping.

Coal bed methane sites in particular require low volumes of water to continuously be removed to allow methane gas production. Existing water removal methods used for dewatering often proved expensive and unreliable especially when trying to pump low volumes of water.

Using many of the principals of the existing Airwell pump system, Managing Director Alan Brown designed, built and tested a new Airwell pump that was capable of pumping fluids from depths of up to 1,000 metres. Testing of the pump at a coal bed methane site located in the South West of Western Australia commenced in 2005. The pump test was a complete success but was eventually ended in November 2006 by the client (after 18 months of operation) when the wells simply didn’t produce enough gas to be commercially viable.

After much market research Airwell identified that stripper oil wells in the USA as well as shale, and shallow coal seam gas wells in the USA and Canada provided the biggest market for the Airwell Oil and Gas division. This prompted the establishment of an office for Airwell Oil and Gas in Wichita Falls in Texas.

A move into the USA and Canada prompted trials for Airwell’s Oil and Gas pumping equipment in several applications including Oil Stripper wells in Oklahoma and Kentucky, deliquification of shallow gas wells pumping abrasive silts and fluids in Saskatchewan Canada and deliquifying deep shale gas wells in Texas. The collapse of the commodity prices in these markets made investment in new technology unviable and trials were suspending pending improvements in commodity prices.

In 2011 Airwell Oil and Gas turned its focus to the growing coal seam gas industry in Australia and following the installation of the first pump for the Australian market in March 2012 the technology was officially launched at the 2012 APPEA conference in May. The successful launch and installation has generated interest from several other companies who are in the initial stages of organising trials of Airwell coal seam gas deliquifying equipment for their own leases and projects.
